Set your hope fully upon the grace. |
Reflection on Today’s Readings, Tuesday of 8th Week in Ordinary Time II, May 28th, 2024
Texts: 1 Peter 1:10-16 ;Psalm 98; Mark 10:28-31
Bible is the testament of what holy men and women had done for us. It is a call for us to prepare seriously for our salvation. This is clear as St. Peter exhorts us, today, to prepare seriously for our salvation. He anchors this on the fact that holy men and women in the past had worked for us. He notes that the evidence is the gospel that is preached to us. The testament that the holy men and women worked for us should spur us to action in fulfilling our hope.
In the words of St. Peter: “The prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired about the salvation of souls ... It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things which have now been announced to you by those who preached the good news to you” He adds, “Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
St. Peter assures us the truth of the gospel
What does St. Peter mean by today’s exhortation? Perhaps, we preserve their works, labour, by obtaining the grace they spoke about. Perhaps, we make them proud or honour them as we live by what they said. Nevertheless, St. Peter assures us the truth of the gospel by telling us that the prophetic words confirm it. Being the truth, we should take it seriously and gain its blessings, the salvation of our souls.
Jesus Christ assures us today that whatever we give for His sake we shall gain it in hundredfold. He says, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time ... and in the age to come eternal life.” The blessings of living by the gospel is both here and now and in the age to come. It gives us eternal life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You promise that we shall have the rewards for our devotion to You in this time and the next; let us see the fulfilment of your promises in our lives; grant us peace, joy and successes in life. Amen
