Turning Away From God

Turning Away From God
The meaning of human existence is God.

Reflection on Today’s Readings, Friday of 5th Week in Ordinary Time II, February 9th, 2024
Texts: 1 Kings 11:29-32; 12:19; Psalm 81:10-15; Mark 7:31-37

There is always consequence for turning away from God and following other gods. We may have riches but we will still be hungry, thirsty and naked. We may have power but we will still be unable to save ourselves. This is clear in the life of King Solomon. With his wisdom King Solomon left behind a potentially divided kingdom.

The Psalm says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the LORD guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain” (127:1).

King David united the kingdom of Israel and yet not having the wisdom of Solomon. This is to tell us that gifts or talents are fruitless without God. The wisdom of Solomon turned to foolishness as he turned away from God. Hence, the wise says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil” (Prov. 3:5-7). The meaning of human existence is God. Once God is lost human existence becomes meaningless.

He forgot the God their Saviour and Guarantor of peace

King Solomon fell away from God because of his lust for women and trust in human wisdom to establish peace. King Solomon cemented relationships through marriage at the expense of his faith. Those marriages might have come with condition to allow them worship their gods.

He defiled the word of God that says, “Let there be no strange god among you, no shall you worship a foreign god. I am the  Lord your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” He forgot the God their Saviour and Guarantor of peace.

Prayer

God our Father, bend our wills to yours that we may acknowledge You in all our ways and be fruitful. Amen
