Those who will know the Messiah
In Christ we never stop growing.

Reflection on Today’s Readings, Tuesday of 1st Week of Advent B, December 5th, 2023
Texts: Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalm 72:1-2,7-8,12-13,17; Luke 10:21-24

Jesus Christ, today, reveals to us those who will know the Messiah when He comes. This is clear in His words: "I thank you, Father,  Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.” They are those who are simple and open to knowledge, not those who are wise and understanding. To be wise and understanding here is to be closed to knowledge and unwilling to change position. To be infant is to be malleable, open to knowledge, growth and change.

Jesus Christ teaches us, today, to loose up as we await His coming. We are to be malleable, open to knowledge, growth and change. This is because there will be a new revelation. What is this revelation? It is the revelation of the Father in the Son and Son in the Father. It is the unity of the Father and the Son. Jesus puts it thus: “All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." In Christ we never stop growing; let us be malleable.

In Christ we never stop growing; let us be malleable

Prophet Isaiah, in today’s first reading, tells us more about the Messiah we await. He says, “And the Spirit of the  Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the  Lord.” To be wise and understanding is not a sin but to refuse a new revelation, the truth, is a sin. The Messiah Himself will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding and knowledge. We are dead when our wisdom and understanding are not open to new revelation, the truth.

Today’s readings show that the Messiah we bring peace to the world by His revelation. He is coming to reveal the Father to us. He says, “and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." It is when we all know God that peace will reign in the world. In the words of prophet Isaiah: “They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the  Lord as the waters cover the sea.” Let us know the Lord and we shall know peace.

Prayer

Look with favour, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials grant us your compassionate help, that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways. Amen
