The Holy Innocents

The Holy Innocents
We walk in the light when we have fellowship with God.
Reflection on Today’s Readings, Christmas Octave, Feast of the Holy Innocents, Thursday 28th December, 2023
Texts: 1 John 1:5-2:2; Psalm 124:2-5,7-8; Matthew 2:13-18

From time to time, in our nation, we cannot but believe that persons like Herod are still among us. They kill for their ambition or ideology. We hear the killing of group of people either by accident or the other. Such a thing is not different from what happened to the Holy Innocents. Herod killed them to protect his throne. The killing in our nation is a sign that some of us are still walking in the darkness. Until all of us walk in the light, darkness will still be upon our nation.

St. John reminds us, today, that God is light. He says, “This is the message we have heard from  Jesus Christ and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.” The darkness upon our nation is a sign that our religious outlook is fake; we are religious liars. In the words of St. John: “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth”.

It calls for re-evaluation of our beliefs

It is now time to be sincere with our religious beliefs. In some aspects it calls for re-evaluation of our beliefs. We are to jettison every belief that is hostile to life. Every belief that is hostile to life should be condemned, so that we can walk in the light. We walk in the light when we have fellowship with God. St. John puts it thus: “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth”.

Prayer

O God, whom the Holy Innocents confessed and proclaimed on this day, not by speaking but by dying, grant, we pray, that the faith in you which we confess with our lips may also speak through our manner of life. Amen
