An Example of whom Christians should be

Reflection on Today’s Readings, Monday of 24th Week in Ordinary Time, Year II, September 12th, 2022
Texts: l Corinthians 11:17-26.33; Psalm 40:7-10. 17; Luke 7: 1-10

The centurion in today’s gospel reading is an example of whom Christians should be. He was a good man and his good deeds endear him to the Jews. The elders of Jews said, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue.” Let us all be full of good deeds. He was a man of authority, so high, yet looked down on the lowly. He begged Jesus Christ to heal his servant who was sick. Whatever the position we are in life, we should learn to consider the lowly.

The centurion was also humble. His humility endear him to Jesus. His humility is displayed in recognising his unworthiness to have Jesus in his house. He said, , “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you.” Jesus recognised him as man of uncommon faith. We are encouraged today to live humble life. Let us humble ourselves before God and He will heal us.

He affirmed what the Jews denied to Him.

The centurion showed an informed knowledge of Jesus Christ. He recognised Jesus Christ as a man of authority. Perhaps, Jesus Christ recognised him as a man of uncommon faith because the acknowledgement of His authority. He affirmed what the Jews denied to Him. They once challenged the authority (Mark 11:28).

Whenever we come to worship God, let us approach him with heart full of goodness, faith and humility. We are not to approach God with heart full of malice, hatred, and coldness. In today’s first reading, St. Paul condemned division among the Corinthians. Such disposition deny us of participation in Christ, even when we eat His body and drink His blood.

God our Father, grant that we may be good of heart, help us to live a humble life and give glory to Your name. Amen
