Give not Holy Thing to Dog

Reflection on Today’s Readings and the Memorial of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Tuesday 21st June, 2022

Texts: 2 Kings 19:9b- 11.14-21.31-35a.36; Psalm 48:2-4.10-11; Matthew 7:6. 12-14

Some of our problems arise from the fact that we have given to the dog something holy and to the swine pearls. What happens when we give to the corrupt the affair of our nation? Do we need anyone to tell us that a man who buys votes is corrupt? When we sell our votes, we give to the dog something holy and to the swine pearls. Just as Jesus Christ has told us, it has ripples effect. In His words: “Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you.” We witness the ripple effect in kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, corruption and bribery, robbery, etc. When we give the affair of our nation to the corrupt, they turn back and attack us.

Today’s first reading gives an example of persons to whom something  holy is given and before whom pearl is laid down. We are told today of how king Hezekiah took his case to the Lord and the Lord helped him. King Hezekiah was a man who fears the Lord. Jesus Christ also teaches us that we should seek to do to others what we want them to do for us. Just as we want other to love us so also we are to do to our help us. Jesus also tells us today to appreciate self-discipline and difficulties.  He reminds us that easy road does not lead to salvation but destruction.

The power of prayer is also evident in today’s first reading; we are to pray always. What  is happening among us reveals that we need prayer this time more than ever before. Just like king Hezekiah we are to run to God, we need to pray more earnestly. God will not abandon us just as He did not abandon King Hezekiah.

St. Aloysius, pray for us. Amen
