Advent: Obedience to God's Will

Reflection on Today's Readings, Tuesday of 3rd Week of Advent, Year C, December 14th, 2021
Texts: Zeph. 3:1 -2.9-13; Ps. 34:2-3.6-7.17-15.19.23; Mat 21:28-32
Today we are reminded that the expected Messiah will bring peoples who have gone astray to acknowledge God. He will accomplish this by changing their speech to pure speech. They will have a clear mind and the understanding of God. When they have a clear mind about God, they will serve Him and bring Him offering. These are the people who are yet to know God. Christ, in His first coming has fulfilled this prophecy. Jesus, by His death, has drawn all men to God. In His words: "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). Jesus, by His death, reveals how much God loves us.
Jesus, in today's gospel reading, reminds us that doing the will of God is what endears us to God and win us salvation. What God demands from us is the obedience to His will. Being Christian by name means nothing, it brings no salvation; it is by doing the will of God that we get salvation. We are Christians by doing the will of God, not by bearing the name. There are some people who are Christians and yet do not bear the name Christian.

Lord our God, banish the darkness of our hearts, that we might know You as the true God and willingness submit to Your will. Amen.

Fr. Andrew Olowomuke
