Sin hunts sinners

Reflection on Today's Readings, Saturday of 33rd Week in Ordinary Time, Year 1, November 20th, 2021
Texts: 1Mac. 6: 1-13; Ps. 9:2-4.6.16.19; Luke 20:27-40
Today's first reading tells us how evil action of King Antiochus began to hunt him. He says, "But now I remember the evils I did in Jerusalem. I seized all her vessels of silver and gold; and I sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judah without good reason. I know that it is because of this that these evils have come upon me; and behold, I am perishing of deep grief in a strange land.” Sin always hunts sinners; they often think their sins might be the reason for the evils that come upon them. This reminds us the words of the wise: "The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion" (Prov. 28:1). It is always good for us to do good that we might gain confidence before God and man. Let us do good, that we may have rest of mind and peace, that we may not run when nothing pursues us. When we are righteous, we will fear no evil news, for we will be sure of resurrection. It is the righteous that have hope of resurrection. Resurrection is a victory over evil.
Today's gospel reading reminds us that resurrection is sure; God, Himself,   affirms the truth of resurrection. Jesus puts it thus: "But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him.”  Let us live righteously and make ourselves worthy of resurrection.

Lord, Jesus Christ, help us to live righteously that we may gain confidence in your presence and at the end experience the power of your resurrection. Amen
