Reflection on Today's Readings, Tuesday of 27th Week in Ordinary, Year 1, October 5th, 2021
Texts: Jonah 3 :1-10; Ps. 30:1-4.7bc-8; Luke10:38-42
Today's first reading is the confirmation of the word of the Psalm 51:17: "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." This is clear both in the life of Jonah and the life of the people of Nineveh. Jonah stopped being stubborn and obeyed God. The people of Nineveh also humbled themselves from the King to the least in the city. They humbled themselves and were sorry for their sins. When we humble ourselves, accept our sins and are sorry for them, God will pardon us and forgive us our sins. We are assured once again today that God forgives us when we have humble and contrite hearts.
The reading also reminds us of the word of St. Paul: "So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ" (Rom. 10:17). It is said, "And he cried, 'Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be over thrown!' And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. Then tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes." The people heard the word of God and repented from their sins. The importance of the word of God is further emphasised by Jesus Christ in today's gospel reading. Jesus said that Mary who sat listening to His teaching had chosen the right path and that nothing would take it away from her. This calls us to prioritise the word of God in our lives. If we want to become better every day, let us listen, read and meditate on the word of God daily. The word of God is potent in transforming life; let us orient our lives towards it.
Lord our God, open our ears to hear your words that we may have faith and be saved. Amen.
