Advent: Awaiting the Holy One, our Strength

Reflection on Today's Readings, Wednesday, 2nd Week of Advent, Year B, December 9th, 2020

Texts: Is. 40:25-31; Ps. 103:1-4.8.10; Matt. 11:28-30

We are called today to wait for the Lord, for "they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not faint." This is a reminder that God is our strength. Hence, in today's gospel, Jesus Christ invites us, saying: "Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This invitation is a call to discipleship; we must take up his yoke, keep his commandments and learn from him. He says, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for l am gentle and lowly of heart, and you will find rest for your souls." This reminds us that being gentle and lowly in heart are crucial to having peace. If we want peace we have to be gentle and lowly in heart, we should not seek what is beyond us.

Today's first reading makes us understand that many of us turn away from God, the source of strength and peace, because of our ignorance of who he is. Our God is mighty and has no comparison. Since he has no comparison, he invites us to know him by his works. God's greatness is evident in his creation and providence. He says, "To whom will you compare me, that I should be like him? Says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing."

God does not only create, he also guides creations. God wants us to know that caring for us is part of his act of creation. He does not display his greatness in creating us alone, he also shows it by saving us. He is great in might because he can save what he created.

Sometimes we fail to realize that God is able to save us. Hence, he reminds us of his holiness and control over all things. He who created all things has control over them. God says, "Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, 'My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God'? Have not heard? The Lord is everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, his understanding is unsearchable." He does not create alone, he has power to save; he does not faint alone, he also gives strength; he is not mighty alone, he also increases the strength of those who have no strength. It is said, "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength." This is a reminder to continue waiting on God; he is the only one who can save us.

Lord our God help us to  sustain our hope in you, grant us your peace and increase in strength. Amen.
