Living According to One's Calling

Reflection on Today's Readings, Friday, 29th Week in in Ordinary Time Year II, October 23rd, 2020

Texts: Eph. 4:1-6; Ps. 24:1-6; Luke 12:54-59

Jesus Christ, in today's gospel reading, speaks of the people's inability to recognize that the Messianic age has come. Jesus Christ tells us that we have all it takes to be aware of his presence as Messiah among us. He tells us that God has made us in such a way that we can be aware of him and that this is evident in our ability to interpret the appearance of earth and sky. This reminds us of the possibility of not using the gift God has given us to better our relationship with him. If I am a singer, do I sing songs that are edifying or worldly? Am I a writer, what do I use pen to do? Do I use pen to promote peace or corruption? We may ask our age what we use social media and internet to do? Is it to spread fake news?

Jesus also reminds us that prevention is better than cure. He says, "As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper." While still living here and now, we have opportunity to make peace with God and one another before the judgement day.

St. Paul, in the first reading, tells us to live life worthy of our calling. We are to holiness of life, to God's own glory and excellence (1Pet. 1:3,15), to fellowship of Jesus Christ, and to peace ( 1Cor. 1:9; 7:15). We are to live our lives in company of Jesus Christ by obeying his instructions and commands. We are to live holiness of life, manifesting God's glory and excellence.

We are also called to work for peace, we are God's ambassadors of peace to the world. If we are to be God's ambassadors of peace to the world, we need to make peace within ourselves. Hence, St. Paul asks us to live our callings "with lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

At this time of our nation let us seek peace. Let us stop destroying our heritage.

God of peace, we pray you to grant our nation, Nigeria, peace once again. Amen.
