Faith: Means of Becoming Sons of God

Reflection on Today's Readings, 27th Week in Ordinary Time Year II, October 10th, 2020

Texts: Gal. 3:22-29; Ps. 105:2-7; Luke 11:27-28

St. Paul, in today's first reading, tells us that we are in the era of faith. With the coming of Jesus Christ, the law becomes obsolete, for law itself looks towards faith in Jesus Christ. He says, "Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith."

Faith in Jesus Christ earns us a great dignity, it grants us the position of sons. St. Paul says, "But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith." Being sons we are heirs of the kingdom of God, heirs to eternal life. Faith in Jesus Christ does not just justify us, it also makes us sons. As sons we have authority in the household of God. In Jesus Christ, God becomes our Father,  he begets us in his Son.

Faith in Jesus Christ also makes us one. He says, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for we are all one in Christ Jesus."

Faith in Jesus Christ grants us a lot of blessings. Having faith in Jesus Christ is hearing the word of God and keeping it. When we hear the word of God and keep it we are blessed. Hence, Jesus Christ, in today's gospel reading, says, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it."

God our Father, we thank you for the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, for in him we are sons, through faith; help us not to lose the dignity the faith bestow on us. Amen.
